It may be the Arctic, but it’s still hot enough to melt a thermometer. A Norwegian-led expedition has offered the first glimpse of the most northerly and most isolated undersea hydrothermal vents yet discovered. “It’s like going to a new continent for the first time,” comments Jon Copley, a deep-sea biologist at the UK’s National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. The two vent fields are located at latitude 71 degrees north on Mohns Ridge, between Iceland and the island of Spitsbergen.
